How To Fix A Leaky Bathtub Faucet?

In a nutshell, Bathtub Faucets are very simple to “rebuild” with the right tools and a little help from someone who has done it before. First turn off water supply valves under your sink, and remove the plastic/metal handles. Use a handle puller if need be, remove the plastic or brass stems with channel lock pliers, access the internal guts by removing these stems and simply remove the rubber washers, and brass seats. Behind the scenes, take off only the handle of the bathtub faucet, bring it to your local hardware store. You can also take some good pictures. If you are lucky enough to talk to the plumber there, he will recommend you a rebuild kit depending on the parts you have removed. Nearly every hardware store or home center will have correct seats, washers, and other replacement parts, tools, and accessories you will need.

The only way to remove the brass seats that are internally threaded into the body of the faucet is with a special tool which plumbers call a seat wrench. These tools are used only for that purpose and they are expensive.

You have to shut the water off to the entire house until the bathtub faucet is fixed because there are no shut off valves dedicated to the bathtub faucet only, unless you have a PEX system.

Get inside of it and find out what kind of seals the bathtub faucet has. There are two small springs with little round seals that fit over them. Just stretch the springs out about another 1/8″ and put everything back together. If that doesn’t fix it, the rubber seals and springs can be replaced fairly cheaply.
