Choosing a Touchless Faucet Line: What Actually Differs Between Collections (and What Doesn’t)
BathSelect offers touchless faucets across more than a dozen named collections — Solo, Platinum, Munich, Cancun, Denver, Dax, Marsala, Bravat, Monaco, Milano, Verona, and others. The differences that matter for a purchasing decision aren’t always the ones a product photo shows.
With this many named collections, it’s easy to assume the differences between them are mostly cosmetic — a finish here, a spout shape there. Some genuinely are. But a few underlying technical decisions vary meaningfully across touchless faucet lines, and those are the ones worth understanding before comparing finishes and price points. This guide covers what those differences actually are, so you know which questions to ask about any specific collection.
What “touchless” actually means, mechanically
Every touchless faucet uses an infrared (IR) proximity sensor to detect a hand or object entering a defined activation zone in front of the spout, then triggers a solenoid valve to open water flow. That much is common across essentially every touchless faucet on the market, regardless of brand or collection. What varies underneath that shared basic mechanism is sensor range and sensitivity tuning, the power source driving the solenoid, response latency, and how the system avoids false triggers from splashing water or nearby movement.
The variables that actually matter for a purchasing decision
- Power sourceBattery-powered units (commonly AA or a sealed lithium pack) install without electrical work but need periodic battery changes; AC-adapter or hardwired units need a nearby outlet or wiring but eliminate battery maintenance — a meaningful difference for a facility maintaining hundreds of units.
- Sensor range & sensitivityWider or more sensitive detection zones activate more reliably for a range of hand sizes and approach angles, but can also be more prone to false triggers from splashing or nearby movement — the sensitivity tuning is a real design tradeoff, not just a spec number to maximize.
- Response latencyThe delay between hand detection and water flow. Shorter is generally perceived as more responsive, but extremely short latency paired with an oversensitive detection zone is a common cause of accidental activation.
- Finish & mounting styleThis is where collections genuinely differ the most visibly — deck-mount vs. wall-mount, spout height and reach, and the finish palette available (chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, PVD gold) per collection.
- Manual overrideSome lines include a manual handle alongside the sensor for maintenance or power-failure situations; others are sensor-only, which matters for facilities that want a fallback if a battery dies mid-shift.
Battery-powered
Simple retrofit installation, no electrical work — but requires a maintenance schedule for battery replacement across every unit.
AC / hardwired
No battery maintenance, but requires an outlet or electrical rough-in — a bigger factor in new construction than retrofit.
Questions worth asking before choosing a collection
Rather than starting from a collection name and working backward, it’s usually more efficient to start from your actual constraints — retrofit or new construction, battery maintenance tolerance, finish requirements — and use those to narrow the field.
- Is the unit battery-powered or does it require an AC connection, and does your installation support that?
- What’s the manufacturer’s stated battery life under typical use, and is battery replacement tool-free?
- Does the collection include a manual override, or is it sensor-only?
- What finish options are available in this specific collection — not just the BathSelect line overall?
- Is the sensor range/sensitivity adjustable during installation, or fixed at the factory?
The collection name tells you the aesthetic. The five variables above tell you whether it fits how the space is actually used.
